As a born-and-bred local of the Great Southern, Albany holds a special place in my heart. It’s more than just a historic port town; it’s a treasure trove of breathtaking landscapes, unique experiences, and culinary delights that often fly under the radar. If you’re looking to escape the hustle and bustle for a weekend, forget the crowded tourist traps. I’m going to share some of my absolute favourite spots and activities that make an Albany getaway truly unforgettable.
Discovering Albany’s Untamed Coastline
While The Gap and Natural Bridge are undoubtedly magnificent, there’s so much more to explore along our dramatic coastline. For a truly immersive coastal experience, head west towards Little Beach in the Two Peoples Bay Nature Reserve. It’s consistently voted one of the most beautiful beaches in Australia for a reason. The sand is powdery white, the water is an unbelievable turquoise, and it feels worlds away from anywhere.
Don’t just stop at Little Beach. Venture a little further to Emu Point. It’s a sheltered bay perfect for a relaxed swim or paddleboarding, especially if you have little ones. The calm waters and stunning views across to Torndirrup Island make it a peaceful haven. Pack a picnic; the BBQ facilities here are excellent.
Secret Coastal Walks and Lookouts
For the hikers and nature lovers, Albany offers some incredible walking trails. The Albany Heritage Park, home to the National Anzac Centre, also boasts walking tracks with panoramic views. My personal favourite is the path leading down from the Anzac Centre towards the coast. It’s a moderate walk, but the reward is a feeling of absolute solitude with the ocean stretching out before you.
Another gem is the walk around Middleton Beach. While it’s a popular spot, keep an eye out for the smaller, less-trodden paths that branch off towards the headlands. You might just stumble upon a secluded cove perfect for quiet contemplation or spotting seals.
Culinary Delights: Beyond the Usual Suspects
Albany’s food scene has exploded in recent years, and it’s not just about fish and chips by the water anymore. We have incredible producers right on our doorstep, and the restaurants are showcasing them beautifully.

The Gnowangerup Community Hotel, a bit of a drive but worth every kilometre, offers hearty, honest food with ingredients sourced from the surrounding farms. It’s a real taste of country hospitality.
Closer to town, The Lakehouse Denmark (yes, it’s in Denmark, but it’s a perfect stop on your way to or from Albany) offers a stunning vineyard setting and a menu that celebrates the region’s bounty. Think succulent lamb, fresh seafood, and vibrant vegetables, all paired with exceptional local wines.
Artisan Producers and Local Brews
Don’t miss exploring the local artisan producers. The Old Milk Factory on the Albany Highway is a delightful stop. Here you can find local cheeses, jams, and other delicious treats. It’s a great place to pick up edible souvenirs.
For those who appreciate a good brew, Albany has some fantastic options. Boston Brewing Co. in Denmark is always a hit, but closer to Albany, check out the smaller, independent breweries that are popping up. Ask locals for their current favourite! Many pubs also feature local craft beers on tap, so strike up a conversation with the bartender.

The sheer majesty of seeing these giants breach is something you’ll carry with you.

Albany’s history is rich and deeply significant. The National Anzac Centre is a must-visit, offering a poignant and immersive journey into Australia’s wartime past. Allow ample time to absorb the stories and exhibits.
Wander through the historic streets of Albany itself. The architecture tells tales of a bygone era. Visit the Albany Heritage Society Museum for a deeper dive into local history. Don’t forget to explore the old whaling station, now the Albany’s Historic Whaling Station Discovery Bay, for a fascinating, albeit sobering, look at our maritime past.
